About Me

I'm Ragnar Avery

Ever since I was young, I’ve loved to be creative and make things, which I did often while growing up in northern Indiana. This joy of creating took me to Purdue University where I earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating, I pursued a career at a Fortune 500 chemical company in mid-Michigan, which took me all over the world and exposed me to different cultures, sights, and experiences that shaped my life and creativity and whetted my appetite for travel.

Eventually, my wife and I relocated to Kalkaska where I worked from home. Once there full-time, it was the ever-evolving beauty and scenery of Northern Michigan that inspired me to dabble in photography, that, and an introductory workshop on digital photography. That initial curiosity has become a passion for capturing and creating great photography.

Since 2009, I’ve been studying the art of photography, and in 2016, began taking two workshops every year. In attending these workshops, I’ve traveled to the Oregon Coast, Iceland, Ireland, Montana, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Hawaii. I’ve also photographed parts of several National Parks, including Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pictured Rocks, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Arches, and Saguaro. Combining travel and photography is one of my greatest joys.

Since embarking on my photography journey, I have been honored with a number of awards at juried fine art photography exhibitions in Northern Michigan.

Inspiration

The beauty of landscape photography continues to enrich my life and boost my soul, providing me with inspiration for my art. The sheer number of beautiful locations in the United States amazes me and I look forward to exploring and capturing images in more and new settings in the coming years.

Techniques

I love using modern techniques and specialized approaches, like focus stacking and panoramas, to capture unique landscape photos. Special post-processing techniques allow me to bring my images to life and keep them consistent with what I saw in the field. And astro photography has enabled me to capture images of the Milky Way, meteors, and Aurora Borealis.

Career Highlights

One of my major career highlights was taking third place at Crooked Tree Arts Center’s 2018 Fine Art Photography Exhibit juried by photographer Howard Bond. I have been honored with several awards at the Mackinac Island Art Exhibit as well. I am also a board member of our local camera club and a professional member of the North American Nature Photographers Association.
